Flight remains one of humankinds most spectacular achievements. For centuries the idea of man taking to the sky was thought of as impossible. It was once said that “If God had intended us to fly he would have given us wings”. However the Wright brothers set about challanging the realms of possibilities and built there own wings in order to fly.

In the endevour of finding a practical flying machine the Wright brothers first developed a kite in 1899, followed by three gliders in 1900, 1901 and 1902.

In December, 1903, on the sands of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, through planning and perseverance, the Wright brothers achieved the milestone of manned, controlled, powered flight. They continued their work over the proceeding two years and by the end of 1905 they had reached their goal, a machine capable of sustained flight under control of a pilot.

The invention of the airoplane is a turning point in history. The legacy of the Wright brothers’ accomplishment, the virtues displayed by these two men and the great impact of powered flight on mankind in the twentieth century should be recognized and preserved to challenge us and future generations to achieve great things.
